Director of EMR Surveys, John Lincoln, has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Degree and extensive experience in EMR. He is a member of the ARPANSA (Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, a Federal Government Agency) Working Group . ARPANSA has the responsibility of protecting our health and the environment from the harmful effect of ionising and non-ionising radiation.

The ARPANSA Working Group is currently preparing a Standard for maximum exposure levels to electromagnetic fields (EMR ) in the range of 0 Hz to 3 kHz.

Philosophy: To educate people about the potential risks of electromagnetic radiation and to investigate homes and workplaces where EMR may be causing illness or behavioural problems

To provide Solutions: After investigating problem situations, to advise on plumbing or electrical work that needs to be undertaken to resolve the problem

Electromagnetic Fields
Whenever a voltage or potential difference exists across an electrical circuit, a current will flow. The voltage and the current create an electromagnetic field.

This electromagnetic field is composed of Electric Fields which are caused by the voltage difference between the conductor and the ground and Magnetic Fields which are created by the current flow.

Electric fields in homes are usually low (2-3 volts/metre) whereas in Power Lines they can be very high (3,000 to 5,000 volts/metre). However it's relatively easy to shield electric fields. Magnetic fields travel through all materials. They are very difficult to shield but can often be diverted.

Observed Negative
Health Effects

  • Childhood Leukaemia

  • Headaches

  • Lymphomas

  • Soft Tissue Sarcomas

  • Sleep Disturbances

The International Agency for Research into Cancer (IARC) 2001 categorised magnetic fields of only 4 mG as "possibly" carcinogenic.

Common Sources
of EMR

- Electrical Wiring
- Power Lines
- Electric Metre Boxes
- Electric Blankets
-Banks of fluorescent and low wattage lights
- Digital Displays, especially Clock Radios
- Neutral Currents (metal water pipes)

Case Study 1:
Air hostess with sleep problems

Found 29 mG at pillow. Electric metre box outside bedroom wall. From metre box, an earth connection ran under bed to connect with water pipe from bathroom.

Even with all electricity off there was still current coming from the neutral wire in the street. This was found to emanate from a neighbour's house!

Case Study 2:
Commercial cleaner with
bowel cancer

Male had cleaned for 18 years with a vacuum cleaner attached to his back. Testing of the machine showed 100 mG on surface and 220 mG on parts next to his body. The tumour had developed at the site where the lead left the vacuum cleaner.
